I love the amp - not sure what it's based on but mine is from 1997 pre effects loop and has Drake transformers.
I tested many Bright Cap values of ceramic disc and silver mica and prefer no bright cap. This makes the amp much more usable for me. The stock 4700 pf cap causes immediate gain and volume with a ton of treble for channel 1.
Mine takes pedals very well and has great tone. I believe Dickey Betts uses one.
Amps - Marshall Super 100JH, 1987x, 2204 Master Volume, 4502, Bassman 59 LTD, Fender Champ (79), Fender 75
Guitars - Les Paul Standard, ES-335, 62 Strat RI, 85 MIJ Squier Tele, Guild D55
Effects - Picture Wah, Octafuzz, Sunface NKT, KOT, KR Boost, MDV-2, DM-2

The current 1987x models are still using the same circuit that has always been in the 1987 models since the switch to PCB Lead 50's back in '73(?). So other than the effects loop added on (which can be switched out) they are the same as the JMP and JCM 800 Lead 50's. :Thumbs

Awesome amps BTW but I reckon I am biased. :beerme

Thanks guys. I am having Curt Granger build me a 1987 to 73 specs with a few tweaks. I am also getting a solo boost in it and a pull put to make it like a 2204 with cascading gain stages! How freakin cool is that?

I think I want one of these in a bad way. Wish they had built in attenuator.
Many Marshall's, and I want more.

Just poking Surf... he is a bit skeptical to the use of attenuators, not due to technical issues but that it degrades the tone regardless... same with EPA or power scaling :coffee

Ahhh I see. I do think they degrade the tone a bit, but when your dealing with a Plexi, you almost have to have one don't you? They are so dang loud, I'd rarely get a chance to turn it up to the sweet spot. I don't play large venues.

I will throw in a bold statement here...

I claim that in the right circumstances a good attenuator or power scaling will improve the tone...

Take my AFD100 and JCM800 1987... On the AFD100 I have the EPA and on the JCM800 I have a Dr.Z Airbrake... both amps I have tried to dime, though only at home. The result is the same... it hurts my ears long before I hit Volume 10 or EPA 10 and the sound is just muddy. This is because of the way the sound try to get free in a small room... the same will happen in a small venue...

Of course there are smaller amps that will work better at home and small venues, but even pushing a 12W tube amp is darn loud there... and I don't know of any AFD5 being available yet (only rumors) or 5W plexi's... and I am impressed with the sweetness of the tone of my JCM800 even when heavily attenuated...

Interesting. I have little to some experience with attenuator, but if I were to use one I think I'd rather have it built in like the AFD. I'm hoping all modern or re issue Marshall's come that way in the future.
