Hypothetical question here guys, forgive my ignorance...

If I were to buy an amp that was built in the States, and got it shipped over here, aside from the power chord, what would have to be done to the amp in order for me to plug it in and get it to work?

And vice versa. Would a Marshall made for the UK market work in America.

If it's major work to convert, what's the simplest way around this?

Amps all run on 110v over here in the US and in the UK the household voltage is 220v. Many amps already have a voltage selector so that would be the easiest. If it doesn't you could get a step down transformer for it, but the simple solution to me is to replace the existing power transformer with the export transformer version. You would also want to change the mains fuse value as appropriate.

Not really any amp in particular Surf. Although, it was a discussion about the AFD100 at work that started it all. If the US and Japan sell out quickly, we wondered if the custom would spill over onto the UK market. Just wanted to know the ins and outs of it.

I moved to Canada from the UK 5 years ago. I brought my JCM600 head with me. At that time Marshall provided the circuit diagrams f.o.c. I bought a replacement mains power switch from them (neon type). The mod from 230 to 110 was a simple mod to the transformer winding links, and change the fuse and the switch. Not all transformers have that option though, nor do they have the input voltage switch (like you find on the back of a PC PSU). Marshall don't provide the diagrams anymore unless your a dealer or registered repairer. Probably plenty of diagrams on the internet no doubt. I'm sure Marshall tech department in the UK will advise you the best course of action for which ever particular amp.
