I think the tone is great, of course I love the JTM sound. He had the Les Paul singing from the ghosts of Cream for sure. A real 65, still sounds really good.

Nice post, it's the first time I hear him playing. Udo Pipper does know a lot about vintage gear for sure . His articles are a very interesting to read. I can imagine that this man worked on and played all of the most desiderable vintage guitars and amps.

This Video I found is also a nice one:

And there's even a video with a '59 Les Paul:

I've read again his article about the JTM45 in the Marshall Anniversary special issue of the German mag "Gitarre & Bass".

I'm not sure if the amp could be a 1970 MKII that he possibly owns.

About settings he says that those amps played silently and clean sounds rather round and warm. Starting from volume set on 4 a crispy crunch begins which up to 10 develops itself to a "dangerous storm". Highs, Mids and Bass can be fully turned up to get more gain from the amp. The result is a creamy crunch tone that is always well-defined and crispy.

About guitar settings he just mentions that using the volume and tone pots you can create a lot of sound variations with this amp. He also thinks from his experience that the JTM45 is the best amp that takes pedals well.

Finally he found the combination with a 1969 4x12" cab fitted with "Pre-Rola" Greenbacks as the ideal one.

Thanks for this information from the German mag and the additional videos. This "Sleepy Time" tone defines sweet for me. The Clapton original sounds great, but this sound should be more accessible than Cream live at full blast. I have the JH, which I assume is at least similar, but I haven't been able to dial it close enough. Those speakers may contribute a lot. And the vintage guitar. Oh yeah, the player's touch . . . .
