Which JMD?

Postby glucar » 29 Jan 2011, 21:13

I was thinking of getting a new amp. I am considering the Valvetronics+ series but I am more of a Mashall guy. I was checking out the JMD's. I am thinking of getting the JMD102. My experience with Marshall combos have been mixed. I prefer a half stack but do not have a cab anymore and can't afford it. Any suggestions. By the way, I love bottom end...

So get a 50 watt head a 2X12 closed cab; I personally hate the open back cab tone. You can get a 50 watt head a 2X12 for a little more than a 50 watt combo and it would sounds loads better since its a closed back (IMO). This unit smokes anything Vox or Line6 has in production right now.

AMS has 2 JMD heads at 899.00 and a Marshall 2x12 closed back cab for 399.99 or the combo for 1199.00

Welcome to the forum glucar. :Thumbs

Bottom end amount and character can vary immensely with different speakers, cabs and amp power, not to mention the guitar used. The selection of preamps available also vary in their bass content. As always it's best if you can try before you buy.
Still my guitar gently weeps

Thanks guys. I have always enjoyed 4x12's. Sometimes I find a 1960A cab for $300-400 on Craigslist. I may get one and get a head. Any preferance to the 100 watt compared to the 50? I imagined the 100 may have more clarrity and 3 d quality.

Any comments on the 1936 compared to the 1960A?

After having had only combos and even a valvetrononix 100VT......
Get the JMD50 head and a cheapo 4x12 and upgrade later.
The JMD blows a valvetronix amp away. I returned mine the same

I have the JMD 50 watt head and I have it going through an Avatar 2x12 with vintage 30s and it sounds amazing. My personal preference and suggestion is to get the head and get a separate cab with the speakers of your choice. I am not sure what speakers come in the combos but I know they are not typical Celestions. The only other thing I would say is if you do get the combo, consider replacing the speakers with V30s or something. Btw Avatar makes top end cabs and you can prob get a new Avatar for the price of a used Marshall etc.

In reference about the 50w vs the 100w; I am a active gigging player and back in my days of bigger is better the 100watt is what I would suggest but today is 3 decades later and the 50 watt will more than keep up with a loud band like mine. The bass is a 450 watt ampeg with 2X15 and 2X10 the other guitar player is using a Crate head with like a Kabillion watts solid state (lol) and a 4X12 and the drummer hits very hard and my JMD has yet to get to 4 on the master.

Very true............

The Gibson Les Paul and SG sound unbelievable through the head and 1960a cab.

All my Ibanez guitars (Prestige's, 94 Iceman, 91 RG550, and 2009 Jem) sound good but not as good as the Gibson's

The Strats sound OK

The one Schector I have (Tempest Custom) with the 59 and Jazz pups frigging roars in the JMD; although the pups have a little too much output IMO.

I agree with these guys. Get a 50 watt head and a 2x12 cab. You'll have plenty of power for most cases and be able to get a warmer sound without turning it up as loud. If you like bottom end you'll want a closed back as guitarest says. A closed back gives a more focused thump in the low end.

Like noise5150 I run a 50 watt head into an Avatar 2x12 (loaded with G12Cs in my case). I love the sound.
