I have a Ramble FX Marvel drive. Sounds pretty good to me but my favorite is my Rothwell Hellbender. Sounds really good through a clean amp

I modded my DS-1, which is pretty nasty and nasal sounding stock, to get a decent crunchy tone. $50 for the DS-1, about $2-3 in resistors, caps, diodes and your time.

Sadly, I turned into a paperweight after too many experiments.

I have a DS1 from the early 80's. Havent used it in ages. Maybe i should break it out again. I have so many good OD pedals that i forgot that i still have the old DS1!!

The "Made in Japan" ones from the 70s-80s are supposed to be decent right out of the box.

Also, the early ProCo Rat is supposedly a good box. IIRC, Nuno Bettencourt ran one of those into a JCM800 on the first Extreme album. I thought that tone was pretty killer.
