Just got two new pedals

Postby bluesbrother » 24 Jan 2009, 10:35

I sold my boss DD-20. It was the most user friendly pedal with lost of nice features(looper, 2 head tape echo etc)
Before the boss i had a EHX deluxe memoryman(big one) and i always regret the day i sold it.( had it for one year)
The EHX sounds , very organic ,3 dimensional and musical and the boss sounds real flat compared to it.
Having both would make a too big change in sound .They do not sell this modell anymore in europe because it appears
to have led inside (who cares...) so i settled with there new model and it sounds the same to me.This pedal enhances my
sound so much i leave it on all the time and dial in what i want with the blend knob.Frooger mooger is also very good buttwice the price and i simply never use long delay times. On you tube i saw a demo of 3 delay pedals:
EHX deluxe memoryman , MXR carbon copy, Boss. The MXR sounded almost the same but the EHX has more dept in
the sound ( its a matter of taste i think but i like it)

The second pedal is my third boost switch pedal ""vintage fuzz".
Just as the other pedals it has germanium transistors. To me it sounded just as good as the MJM london fuzz
but it costs 70% less

I tried what FAZE did and put my vibe in front of OD/DIST and i really dig it .Especially at very high volumes
it makes a huge difference.I put my fuzz after my wah because it cleans up just the same. When you look at
videos you can see jimi change this many times......just do what sounds best.I put my octave fuzz in front of
my fuzz but i do not know if this is a good place.....Image

You have a good lineup of quality/useable pedals on your board. I can tell a bit of thought went into it.

Looking good. I tried the DD-20 for a couple of weeks but had the same opinion as you. I went back to my Carbon Copy. I haven't heard of the Boost Switch pedals, may have to give them a look.

Thanks Surf,
I really appreciate to hear this from a pro (i am just a amateur bedroomplayer)
Knowing you have a handwired metro amp: I discovered on my vernet when i plug in with a les paul on the normal
chanel instead of the treble channel(volume on 5) and then kick in my treblebooster i get a cranked sound that
rivals any OD/DISTpedal. .The treblebooster to work good it always have to be last in the chain.
All the best.

Hi Blues Brother.

Is the new smaller Memory Man as good as the big box version?
I know it uses four Panasonic MN3008 memory chips so it should capture the vibe of the oldie.
I've never played the new model, how does is rate?
Thanks!

hi ,
I think it sounds exactly the same. The chorus and vibrato are alot better and that did
not work very well on the old version.I really do not understand why for example
slash or joe bonamassa use a boss DD-3 when an anologue pedal is so much better .
The MXR carbon copy also is very good and smaller and cost 159 euro. The EHX cost 259 euro.
Because i uses it very subltle i personally find the EHX very 3 dimensional and most natural
sounding.I am very glad i got it back and this one i will always keep( it is strange after having
too much gear i feel also with my guitars that i am going back with what i started in the first place.....)
EHX pedals use too be big but you got the biggest BIG MUFF pedal

Has anyone ever compared the Memory Man with the Analogman analog delay? I know the Analogman (which I have) has a shorter delay time, but quality-wise does anyone have any thoughts?

faze wrote:Blues Brother congrats on the new pedals. I know how you feel about selling your delay then regretting it.
Thats what I went through when I sold my Moogerfooger analog delay. I ended up buying another one.
I guess it's true you never no a good thing till it's gone.

Glad you like the new set up as well. You are right it's all experimentation. I do like my distortion after my vibe
much better now. I was putting it before the vibe for years and TBH was shocked at how much fatter it sounds
when it's placed after the vibe it is like it makes the vibe thicker sounding, and now with my moog in the mix everything
on my board is warmer sounding. That is a great fuzz you got there I don't think you can find a cooler one then that
with that picture of Jimi on it. 8) I am sure it sounds as cool as it looks :D
Thanks Faze,
Man , i watched your demo more than once.I have seen so much clips on you tube but you really
nailed jimi sounds!!!!
I play mostly blues and listened alot to BB king.
When i go to a guitarshop where they do not know me and try to play some jimi on a strat : the first thing
they say is : He , your vibrato sounds just like BB King......
I guess one cannot have everything

The Memory Man is a classic. I think an under-appreciated delay/echo is the DanEcho. It's pretty warm and vintage sounding with a sturdy build and a small package. Ditto for the CoolCat chorus.
The goal is soul. May the Force be with you.

Nice Pedals man!!

My next pedal will ba an upergrade Echo, i have already bought two
lower grade delays and im just not satisfied,
the echo on my Rocktron Expression is very good but its a beyatch ajusting
it to my needs, till i get an expression pedal for it, i have to do it by hand
and takes time.

so i think getting a nice echo unit like the Deluxe Memory Man is next on the list

I just found they have some Scratch n dent models on sale at MF for $272
so i put one on my wishlst for this friday, luckily im finaly caught up from Christmas
so its time for more shoping :D
