Which OCD?

Postby cocojumbo » 01 Jan 2009, 15:51

I've finally chosen a new OD pedal for my rig, which is OCD (don't even try recomending my something else, thus confusing me for some more time  ). I play MiJ Strats loaded with dimarzio hs-3 pickups (YJM tone fan) and so far I've been using a decent copy of t808. Now it's time for some change. I obviously use VM, 2466 to be exact :) However I have no place to just go and check the OCD v.4 myself (not so popular and common in my country) and I'll be getting an used one from ebay.com anyway, so which version should I get? What are the differences? I'm interested in your opinions since many of you claim to own and love the OCD. Anything will do :D

Oh, give me a break! Once I've found an amp that I like and YJM's not using it, it turns out he actually DOES use it. Some uniqueness please :)

To confuse things even further, turns out there is a "fifth" OCD model, the Robin Trower version:

I've heard conflicting reports on if it is really an OCD variant or not. FWIW I have a V1 OCD clone and I'm not too fond of it with a Strat, but it loves Gibsons. Maybe the newer versions are a bit less harsh sounding. But Trower got terrific sounds out of his OCD (before his signature model).

$100 difference between the OCD and RTO? WTF? $250 is not how much I want to spend on it. I think I'll go for the V4 since V3 is more tubescreamerish.

I have the V4 and I love it. Especially for Humbucker pickups. There is a You Tube video comparing V 4 with previous versions (at least when I was last checking). The differences seem minor and are based around voicing. It's a great pedal and loves the VM :D

You're the one who mentioned "strats", "hs-3" and "YJM tone" in the same sentence.

The OCD and the VM work well together because it simply does not change the tone of this wonderful amp. I will push it nicely and using it in low range is where I find it to work best, no way do you need it in high range IMO. I also find it to work better with humbuckers rather than single coil pickups but that is not to say Strats don't also benefit from it.

Why are you saying there's no need using it in the high range? Since hs-3 is a very low output humbucker I have to use my t808 on high range just to get satisfiyng amount of gain. Otherwise it's just crunch. the main reason I chose OCD is that I belive it won't kill what I like the most about this amp, which is how it responds to my playing and volume knob control.

No need for me I should say :) , I find more than enough gain in high range so my point was that the pedal really benefits the low range better and that is where I find the OCD helpful. If I engage the OCD in high range using my current settings I have to be careful because I will start the amp squealing like a pig.
