Digital SLRs

Postby pillagethesound » 10 May 2010, 07:14

So I provided PA for a big skate demo this weekend and got the chance to borrow a coworker's DSLR and take some pics. They turned out really well and now im kinda thinking of buying one to take pics from shows and do to sorta keep a personal record. Anyone own one or more and have any suggestions? I was using a Canon XTi with a really nice 25-155mm lens with IS and macro focus. They dont make the XTi anymore, so id like peoples opinions on current models, Nikon vs Canon and all. Im thinking of staying in the 10-12 mp range to keep cost down so i can get a nice lens with it. Thanks guys

My girlfriend is the camera expert and there is something about the lenses on those two brands that I can't remember. Something about it's easier to find them for one then the other, I will ask her tonight.

I also have the Canon XTi. The website dpreview is the best site to research your next camera, great information there.

I like Pentax cameras too. The K200D is 10 mp. It has a metal skeleton, so it feels like a real piece of equipment instead of a cheap toy. The camera also has weather proofing. You can buy it with or without a lens. The standard kit lens that comes with the kit is also weather proofed. (Pentax makes some of the best glass in the business.) The K mount takes any Pentax lens going back to the 70s. The camera also takes AA batteries. If you are like me, you are not the best about keeping a camera charged at all times. It is also easy to find a fresh set of batteries while on the go -- anywhere in the world.

Granted Pentax has not made a huge marketing effort in the US, but you can buy their stuff on a number of reputable web sites. Amazon even sells a lot of their stuff.

The Pentax web site is at www.pentaximaging.com. You can check out photos taken with Pentax gear at http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com. The Gallery is one of my favorite ways to waste time on line....along with the VM forum.

I use a Nikon D80 (newer version is D90) DSLR with a 18-200 mm VR lens and a 50 mm 1.4 f prime lens - mainly for shooting work related stuff... a good workhorse camera. I don't think you can go wrong with either a Nikon or Canon DSLR IMO... Pentax are great also.

+1 on dpreview.com ... really thorough and detailed reviews
